During times of Self-Isolation and Social Distancing, Don’t Forget About Vitamin D

According to the EU Register on nutrition and health claims, Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function and helps to reduce the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness[1]. Also, The EFSA states that Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system to all ages, including children[2]

Because of the worldwide COVID-19 Pandemic impact, many are in Self-Isolation and therefore are being less exposed to sunlight, not getting the adequate amounts needed of Vitamin D[3]. As the effective treatments and a vaccine against COVID-19 are developed, people are in a rush of reducing their risk of getting sick. According to former CDC Chief Dr. Tom Frieden, “Higher COVID-19 mortality rates among older people and those with chronic conditions suggest that a weakened immune system contributes to poor outcomes. There are many crackpot claims about miracle cures floating around, but the science supports the possibility – although not the proof – that Vitamin D may strengthen the immune system, particularly of people Vitamin D levels are low” [4].

Also, Dr. Frieden states that adequate amounts of Vitamin D through supplementation might reduce the risk of respiratory infection regulate cytokine production and can limit the risk of other viruses such as influenza. A respiratory infection can result in cytokine storms – a vicious cycle in which our inflammatory cells damage organs throughout the body – which increase mortality for those with COVID-19. Adequate Vitamin D may potentially provide some modest protection for vulnerable populations.
